Assessing The News Value Of Twittering - A Call For Comments of Professional Journalists

by angelique van engelen

HI! Thanks for checking this out. Let's collaborate on an article about people's Twittering experiences. I am hoping to find out what your impressions are of Twitter's news value. I would like to invite you to participate in the collaboration by answering two questions:

1) What was the most unexpected thing you've recently found yourself Twittering about?
2) What is the most unexpected issue you heard via other people's Twitterings? 3) How do you use Twitter professionally?

Leave a short message in the Fool Proof Box or send me your comment via @contentclix on Twitter.
THANKS!!

Sources I am researching for this article are saying:
“Twitter is an experiment in turning OFF a few social taboos, to see what happens next. It shuts down the taboo that says ‘Don’t talk about yourself, people don’t care.’ Don’t string theorists believe that the world has tons of extra rolled-up dimensions? Twitter-ers are playing games with the social dimensions, collapsing a few just to see what might happen next. Will we get bored of it? And what happens next is, most likely, that we all get bored. Or maybe we don’t. Besides–it’s fun being part of this experiment.”

“Wondering how future historians will contextualize all of our digital musings. can only imagine future biographies with quoted twitters…”

G'day mate. I must say that the Melbourne, Australia twitter users are a very, friendly, informative and helpful. We have been having regular meetups for the last 5 months now and we have gotten to know each other well. One interesting twitter event that I must mention is regarding a gun man who shot dead one guy and severely injured two others one morning in Melbourne's CBD. (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21923558-601,00.html) Even before the news broke on the mainstream media, other fellow twitterers were already reporting that their buildings were in lockdown. (http://twitter.com/andrewsayer/statuses/108910512) People were describing the latest police news , the possible direction in which he had bolted and other interesting thoughts. There were even tweets coming through about how a body was covered by a blanket, way before the news broke on the wire. It was informative and very interesting. Another common talking point among un Melbourne Twitterers is the delays on the train network. If one train line is stuffed, odds on someone in Melbourne Twittersphere knows the cause. Other events that have affected a large number of also gets a mention regularly among us. Last month's lunar eclipse was another event that was twittered live. People were informing each other of mid-totality and the like. And of course, we are mad about AFL (http://afl.com.au). This is Australian Football and at the moment, it is finals time. This is a big deal. It's like the Australian version of America's Superbowl. Anyway - we even have one user who tweets live updates about the games he attends. I'm pretty damn sure he hasn't got any rights to broadcast the match (they are really strict about that sort of stuff here - there's a free-to-air vs pay-tv battle at the moment.) Anyway, he is @ afl_live. Thats about it. Please feel free to contact for feed back. I'm considering writing one too. See ya mate! Andrew Sayer

*What was the most unexpected news issue you've recently found yourself Twittering about? Sorry my little english, OK? - There was a discussion about blogging, journalism & credibility in “O Estado de S. Paulo”, one of the major newspapper in Brazil. I cover, in my house remotely, the event using Twitter, silulating a soccer narrator. I got the soccer language to mirror the event climax and faults. It was funny and I think It was a good twitternalism. Brazilians love soccer and, almost always, the soocer is a good metaphor for us. *What is the most unexpected issue you heard via other people's Twitterings? - There are many news service addopting Twitter right now in Brazil... Like: Ultimo Segundo, Epoca Negócios e IDG. But They are copying the foreign use of the ribbon blog. But, we – Brazil – are launching ours ideas of twitter quality and virtuosity. Brazilians are ordinary people but with a extraordinary creativity. We’ll change the Twitter face soon.
