Journalists And Twitter

by angelique van engelen

The hype around Twitter is beginning to spread to its Journalist community. Twitter's role in news breaking events is alerting journalism experts to this silly little tool. Is it possible that microblogging really is useful for things other than socializing and blabbering?

Perhaps shedding light on this issue is the very first scoop by a Twitter user on all other news media. It concerned the death of Jennifer Dunn, a former US congress member. It was a scoop from a scoop. Wikipedia reported the news at 9:12 a.m., only minutes before a newspaper reporter reported it. The source? A 'breaking news alert' from Twitter! It's impossible however to trace the Twitterer!

So much for glory. Which isn't negligeable, by the way; Several sports fanatics are using Twitter to report on live matches and that is an obvious use. Canvassing other initiatives to combine Twitter with reporting news events is pretty tough because it involves researching individuals mostly. At reporTwitters, a site that groups reporters using Twitter, a collaboration project has gone underway to research reporters' use of Twitter. Ultimately, the research will result in a communally written article featuring a journalistic assessment of Twitter.

Participants are asked to answer three questions on a blank news page entitled 'Assessing The News Value Of Twittering - A Call For Comments of Professional Journalists';

1) What was the most unexpected thing you’ve recently found yourself Twittering about?
2) What is the most unexpected issue you heard via other people’s Twitterings?
3) How do you use Twitter professionally?

Some of the responses are listed already. Turns out that normal people are genuinely hooked on the feeling to be the first to report an issue. That's quite a familiar sensation, I would guess.

what i really like on twitter is to find many people from many different countries connected each other...i used twitter to understand how many users from different countries they know about it...i.e.: in iraq just american soldiers r connected not iraqis and some men connect to Usa government. in war people have no time to find new technologies, no internet for Iraqi... on my opinion is a good way to understand better what's going on in different countries...for example u can use terraminds.com to search for updates or users...u can keep in touch with many journalists and u can understand their point of view. an other incredible resource on twitter is the using of the phone ...can u immagine to be in war without internet u can use directly your phone to connect the world to your news...
