NASA final frontier: the web 2.0by Eric GagneNASA wants to go where no spatial agency has gone before: to the web 2.0 galaxy. The idea is to reach the teenage market. Is it a doomed mission? Mike Berkley from Splashcast thinks so. "It won’t work. Asking teenagers to adopt a new social site, especially a nerdy site owned by the government, just ain’t gonna fly. It sounds like a plan hatched by middle-aged burocrats.
However… if NASA ventured to meet teenagers where they already hang out, in Facebook and MySpace, the campaign could actually be quite successful.
I can imagine a very compelling embeddable space widget with high-quality video channels, regularly updated photos from space, trivia games (where friends compete against friends), NASA mission schedule, SpaceCamp sign up form, etc… Kids would dig it and would never have to leave their profile page.
Everyone is trying to figure out how to reach that elusive 15 to 25 year old demographic. Building a social network isn’t the answer. Don’t ask your audience to come to you, take your message to them!"
